The Gem of Somerville

In the opening of "The History of Somerville," the city established by Albert Somerville, the first line states: "Some are like jewels in the mind of man." Entering the Somerville Area Museum feels like stepping into a treasure trove of memories, which is precisely why the museum was established in 1979 by Barney Davis and his wife, Pam. A room within the museum honors him with a bronze bust, reflecting his vision of creating a space for future generations to explore their past and understand the life and events of Somerville and its surroundings. This vision was realized through community involvement, as locals contributed historical documents, artifacts, furniture, tools, and funding. Housed in two adjacent sandstone buildings from the early 1900s, the museum showcases the town's railroad history through photographs, memorabilia, military exhibits, and artifacts from farms, schools, and pioneers. Upon entering from the back, visitors are greeted by a mannequin in railroad worker overalls, while a collection of railroad memorabilia and photographs surround them. The aroma of brewing coffee fills the air as a mannequin dressed in a classic waitress outfit, known as a Harvey Girl,  stands by a table set according to Fred Harvey's standards, complete with sterling silver cutlery and a rose vase. The museum also features a Sanctuary area filled with church artifacts, a Ladies and Children's area, and displays dedicated to the military and the diverse history of the Somerville community, including contributions from early Mexican and African American residents. Located at the intersection of Highway 36 and 8th Street, the museum is nestled in a picturesque park known as Heritage Square, which also honors WWII veterans. Managed by the Somerville Historical Society, a non-profit organization, the museum operates on membership dues and donations and is open on designated Saturdays and by appointment, with no entry fee.
